Unless your exam is online off-campus you must attend the University for your examinations in December and April/May, and the resit diet in July/August. Once results are published the Exams Office will automatically pick up and schedule any necessary and formal exam resits. How do I know if I have a resit?

Once your marks are confirmed at a Progression and Awards Board (PAB) you will be able to see your finalised marks in your Student Portal . If you have a resit or resubmission you will see "resit" in the module tab beneath the component you need to resit with "waiting for confirmation" in the mark column.
If you have failed more than one element, you should also check your board decision as this will indicate whether you are expected to resit with or without attendance. For more info see our results pages.
I thought I had a resit but it isn't showing in my portal

Remember marks in GCULearn are interim marks only. Once the PAB for your programme has met they can, in certain specific circumstances, compensate a mark meaning you do not have to resit an element. If you have a CO mark next to your module this is what has happened . You can find further information in the results pages and in the assessment regulations.
If you still think you should have a resit contact your school or department for further advice.
Do I need to book or pay for a resit?

No. Provided your results have been confirmed the Exams Office will pick up any formal exams that students need to resit. There is no charge to resit exams unless you need to resit abroad. For more information on this see further down the page.
If you need to resubmit a class test or piece of coursework your department will provide you with details on how and when to do this.
When is the re-sit? Will I be allowed to re-sit?

Levels 1, 2, 3 and masters – if you fail a module at the first try you will normally be allowed to re-sit in August.Level 4 (Honours level) - you may be allowed one resit. The resit will normally be in August.When you fail an exam in July/August the next re-sit will usually be in the trimester when the module normally runs, that is either in the December or April/May exam diet.

What happens if I fail just one module?

In each level of study your overall performance may allow the Assessment Board to compensate for failure in up to 20 credit points of module(s) at that level.
Compensation may only be awarded following delivery and assessment of all of the modules which contribute to the eligibility for an award at any given programme level and where no more than 20 credits have been failed at that level. Compensation will not be applied in respect of a final level undergraduate or postgraduate project or dissertation. Some Programme Assessment Regulations may be approved with the regulation that compensation may not be exercised in respect of specified modules. How many modules can I carry forward?

Normally if you fail one module you will be allowed to carry it to the next level. You will have to attend some classes for it. The assessment board may let you carry up to 40 credit points.
How many and which modules you can carry also depends on your course regulations and the Qualifications Framework .
For example, you may not be able to carry a ‘pre-requisite’ module, that is one that has to be passed before you can take one that follows on from it.
Resits Abroad With the exception of online off-campus exams, you must attend the University for your examinations in December and April/May, and the resit diet in July/August. Where it is a requirement of the course of study to be elsewhere during an assessment period for example, work placements, your department will make the appropriate arrangements for examinations.
Am I eligible to take my examination resit abroad?

You may take your examination resit abroad, provided:
your permanent residence is over 500 miles from your main campus of study (this does not include students who are overseas on holiday or non-placement summer employment during the resit diet) you are unable to travel to your main campus of study for medical reasons.
Where can I sit my exam?

You are responsible for locating an appropriate establishment.
Students must first look to take their exams at a British Council Office. If there is no British Council Office in your home country or the British Council are unable to host the exam you should look for an alternative venue which must be an Institute of Higher Education. No other type of establishment will be considered appropriate. The University retains the right to veto your choice.
Is there a charge?

The University applies a fee of £100 for each examination taken at a host institution, payable at the time of application.
You are also liable for any administrative fees charged by the host institution.
When will I sit my exam?

The Examinations Office will contact you with confirmation of your exam date, time and venue.
You will sit your examination on the same date and at the same time as it would be sat in Glasgow - for example, students would take an exam running from 09:30 to 11:30 in Glasgow (GMT), from 11:30 to 13:30 in Greece (EET).
When is the deadline for applications?

The closing date for applications will be set each academic session by the Examinations Office.
Late applications will not be accepted.
Application forms are also available from the Examinations Office in June each year.
Deadline for the 2026/27 resit diet (July/August) will be Friday, 19 June 2027 .
