Designed for registered practitioners, our MSc Advanced Practice helps you build on your existing expertise. You will learn to apply your knowledge critically in areas such as:

This course offers full-time study, with a part-time option for UK-based professionals.

You can complete the MSc Advanced Practice as a general degree, or choose to specialise in one of six specialist pathways.

The Musculoskeletal Health pathway lets you specialise in an important and rapidly developing area of practice. It offers a focused selection of modules designed to support your development and ensure your learning is directly relevant to your field.

You will:

increase your knowledge and skills relating to musculoskeletal health
explore the latest research shaping musculoskeletal practice
undertake a piece of research relevant to advancing your own specialist knowledge and clinical capability.

This pathway strengthens your ability to apply critical analysis, clinical reasoning and evidence-based decision‑making within musculoskeletal contexts. You will also enhance core skills in leadership, communication and education, graduating with the skills you need to influence care for individuals with musculoskeletal conditions.

The MSc Advanced Practice offers three exit awards (MSc, PgD and PgC) allowing flexible progression that aligns with your professional goals. Completion of the course supports progression into advanced and specialist roles, with increased responsibility and influence.

As a graduate of the MSc Advanced Practice (Musculoskeletal Health), you will be equipped for a range of clinical and leadership roles across musculoskeletal services in the NHS, private practice, and independent healthcare sectors.

Typical career destinations include Advanced Musculoskeletal Practitioner or Advanced Clinical Practitioner roles, First Contact Practitioner positions with progression to advanced practice, and specialist musculoskeletal posts across primary and secondary care.

UK honours degree 2:2 (or equivalent). Applicants will normally be registered healthcare professionals.

English language requirement

IELTS score of 6.5 (or equivalent) with no element below 6.0.

Relevant experience (Recognition of Prior Learning)

GCU's flexible entry policies exist to allow relevant work experience and prior learning to be considered towards standard entry or advanced entry into a course.

If you do not have the typical academic entry qualifications, but can demonstrate relevant work experience and/or credits from recognised professional bodies, you may be eligible to enter this course via the University's Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) scheme.

Full time or part time study options

Applicants with at least two years of post-qualification experience, choosing full-time study can graduate with a master’s degree in just one year. Alternatively, part-time study provides flexibility for UK-based professionals balancing work and study over three to five years.

We've moved away from the traditional teacher-centric learning to a more independent learning approach, where you are encouraged to develop critical thinking skills.

Collaborative learning

Interprofessional Simulation Centre

Our Interprofessional Simulation Centre is a state-of-the-art teaching facility where health and social care students learn through realistic, hands-on experience. It includes lifelike hospital wards, simulated home and care environments, an ambulance and specialist spaces such as X‑ray, radiotherapy and physiotherapy clinics.

Using real healthcare equipment, advanced patient manikins and video recording, you'll be able to safely practise real-life situations and review your learning. The Centre supports nursing, paramedic, allied health and social care training.

ISC Recording: We use video and audio recording of students during practical exercises in our teaching and assessment. Students applying to study health related courses should be aware that there will be times when they will be recorded and these recordings may be viewed by programme staff, students, and external examiners for learning and assessment. This is not an optional component of the course.
