Summary of content This module is designed for practitioners who wish to develop their knowledge and understanding of the issues involved in infection prevention and management in healthcare. Students will be encouraged to engage with underpinning knowledge from the disciplines of epidemiology, microbiology, infection prevention, health protection and public health. Students will explore the contemporary issues, current successes and need for action at local, national and global levels to prevent, treat and control infections worldwide.

Learning outcomes arrow_forward Learning Outcome On successfull completion of this modules the student should be able to: 1. Demonstrate a critical understanding of epidemiological, microbiological, infection prevention, health protection and public health principles that enables the student to critically evaluate current research and practice regarding the prevention, treatment and control of infections worldwide. 2. Explore and critically evaluate evidence that underpins the effective development and delivery of infection prevention and control practice in different global contexts. 3. Evidence critical awareness of the contemporary challenges, current successes and need for advancement in the prevention, treatment and control of infections worldwide. 4. Reflect on their own practice and sphere of influence to identify areas within their own practice which could enhance infection prevention and control strategies and work effectively with other individuals, teams and agencies to achieve this. 5. Through active engagement, demonstrate a critical, analytical and evaluative approach to their personal learning and development in the field of infection prevention and control practice.
Teaching / learning strategy arrow_forward The module will be delivered either fully online via GCU Learn or using a blended approach of face to face and virtual learning environments The main activities carried out by students are directed and independent study to develop knowledge and skills relating to the module syllabus. The teaching and learning strategies employed include: lectures/video lectures, synchronous and asynchronous discussion and webinars. Self-directed study to engage the students in the key concepts which will be encouraged through guided activities and directed learning. A case study approach will be used to engage the students in active learning and allow them to apply the theoretical knowledge to practice. Students will then be able to select a case, relevant to their own interest and area of practice, for their assessment. A required formative oral presentation, discussing the context of their selected case study, will allow for timely feedback (peer and academic) in preparation of their summative submission.
