Private accommodation
If you're planning to live off-campus while studying at Glasgow Caledonian University, private accommodation is a popular choice for many students. Whether you're looking for a flatshare, a studio apartment, or lodging with a live-in landlord, Glasgow offers a wide range of options to suit different needs and budgets.
These pages provide helpful information to support your search for private housing, including where to look, what to consider before signing a lease, and how to stay safe and informed throughout the process. While GCU does not directly manage private rentals, we’re here to help you make informed decisions and connect with trusted resources.
There are two kinds of private accommodation available to students: private student halls (called PBSAs) and private rentals, which means renting a room or a property privately from individual landlords, usually through an agency. You can email the Accommodation Support team for a list of recommended PBSAs, or you can find the list through a simple internet search. Remember to try booking through the provider directly instead of an agent or third party for the best rates and services.
There are many ways of seeking private accommodation in Glasgow, either through searching through estate agents' websites or using online sites for rental properties, such as RightMove, OnTheMarket, s1Homes, and Zoopla. The properties advertised on these websites are suitable for all types of arrangements, whether you are looking for accommodation with friends or are moving with your family.
Glasgow has a very competitive housing market, which means you may need to focus your search beyond the city centre, and even look at commuting options. However, we advise you to continue your search diligently and try to get as many viewings as you can.
To assist you in your search, we have an accommodation dossier file that lists towns near the University where finding suitable housing may be easier and more affordable than in the city centre. We've also created an estate agent file that includes a list of both larger agencies and smaller agents who are helpful with students. You can explore their websites and get in touch with them to enquire about available options.
We advise you to be careful when using Gumtree, Facebook or SpareRoom to find accommodation. There's useful information in the FAQs section below on how to stay safe when looking for accommodation, along with other tips.
