Part-time jobs while studying

Finding part-time jobs while studying

Many of our students work part-time whilst studying. This can reduce debt, allow them to continue with their studies, and offer some to help support their families.

Part-time work also benefits our students by allowing them to gain experience and skills that will not only look impressive on their CVs but also give them essential skills for their career success. These essential skills such as communication, time management and teamworking will give them an advantage over applicants that have not yet entered the workforce.

Students may also find that they will build up their network which will be useful for them when they go on to look for graduate or post-graduate roles.

While GCU encourages part-time work for the many benefits, we would recommend a maximum of 20 hours per week to ensure that it does not interfere with their studies.

International students will also need to check their visas for regulations regarding employment when studying and need to apply for a National Insurance number.

Part-time roles are advertised on Career Hub and we would advise students to check there regularly as these are updated a few times a week. The Careers Service also has a blog where information and advice on all matters Careers can be found. Please register for this and follow our Instagram page.

You will find part-time jobs advertised in our CareerHub portal.

Read our Guide to looking for a part-time job with many clickable links to employers.

Another good way of getting a part-time job is to apply speculatively. Think about where you would like to work and do some research into the types of places that are local to you. You can then put together your CV and cover letter and apply direct. Even if the employers you contact are not currently hiring, they may well keep your CV on file.

The Careers Advisers have appointments available to review CVs, application forms and provide with advice for interviews. These can be booked through CareerHub.

We also have regular drop-in clinics in the Campus Life Lounge, on Level 1 of the George Moore Building, details of which can be found in the events section of CareerHub.
