GCU Social Sciences students have come together to produce a programme Newsletter -an online publication designed to showcase the achievements and activities of students and staff on the course.

The newsletter, which is a collaboration of both staff and students, is run by the Social Sciences Student Engagement team. The team is made up of students that have volunteered their time to create content for the newsletter, meeting once a month to discuss what will go into the next issue.

The newsletter includes content such as student and staff spotlight features, department news and even information about coursework. The purpose of the newsletter is to break down barriers between staff and students, reinforcing the sense of community within the department.

Fourth year Social Sciences student Ciara McLoughlin explained why she decided to join the team and how the newsletter has brought the course closer together.

She said: “I decided to join the newsletter for two reasons; to highlight the views of my peers and to raise awareness about mental health.

I believe it has brought the students and staff closer together as it has resulted in them engaging with us more and understanding the experiences we have as students. I would recommend that other courses start their own newsletter as well, as it allows the course to become closer and feel valued. “
