GCU’s Physiotherapy Society is keeping the community spirit alive through involving all year groups in Microsoft Teams revision sessions.

There have been three trial meetings held so far with students getting the opportunity to learn about everything from Parkinson’s disease through to how university placements work.

Society secretary Chris Milligan explained why he wanted to bring everyone together and his hopes to make the sessions a more permanent feature in the future.

Chris said: “With everything finishing so abruptly, we were thinking about ways we could help and make sure students continue to feel engaged in their work.

It’s important for us as a society to give our online presence a boost at this time, especially when we don’t know if we’ll be back on campus in September.

The Microsoft Teams meetings have brought together students from all different year groups and it’s been a great way for everyone to feed off each other’s varying levels of experience.

We’d normally be going into classes to help out and support students in the younger year groups and that obviously a challenge online – so this is our way of combatting that.”

He added: “It’s been really nice to see everyone back together again. The committee are meeting to discuss how many we run in future and what topics to cover – because it’s definitely been beneficial to all involved.”

The society welcomed a new committee at the start of June and were boosted by the news that they have been nominated in two separate categories at GCU Student Association’s Star Awards 2020.

Chris explained his delight at how far they’ve come in such a short period of time.

He said: “It’s great to see us up for Society of the Year and Best Society Event. It gives you a massive boost and the chance to step back and look at all that’s been achieved.

We’ve only properly been going for a couple of years - it’s quite exciting thinking about the possibilities of where we can take it in the future.

It’s all about having an impact on the all physiotherapy students and I hope we can continue to do that in the future.”
