OT Society provide online resources to help students adjust to life on the inside
GCU’s Occupational Therapy (OT) Society have been helping students adapt to life at home – with a specific focus on continued learning and mental health.
A new resource was provided each day last week, through the group’s Twitter and Facebook pages, which highlighted a number of apps and websites - ranging from the British Medical Journal through to Sanvello, which aims to assist with stress and anxiety.
The society’s academic events officer Katie Moffat explained the idea behind the campaign.
She said: “Quite a lot of students have had their placements cancelled due to the pandemic, which was obviously really disappointing.
This all mainly came about as a way to allow students to continue to pick up on the experiences and learning that they would have been benefitting from out in the community.”
Katie added: “We’re aware that some students may not have social media, so additionally we’re planning to write a piece for the OT Blog which will be sent out to everyone and include the resources – meaning nobody misses out.”
Katie, who’s in her second year at GCU, also pointed out the importance of making sure students don’t become isolated while working from home.
She explained: “A couple of the resources allow students to complete activities as a group, which is really important as we want to make sure they don’t feel like they’re alone.
Occupational deprivation is a big thing just now because people are stuck at home and don’t have access to things they usually would. It’s important that we help address that and hopefully that will help us all adapt to the current situation.”
