GCU’s Nursing Society is helping students stay on track with their studies, while also focusing on mental and physical wellbeing during lockdown.

The group’s dedicated committee have been reaching out to students on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter with posts focusing on study tips, how to keep active at home and a special daily revision hour – which allows students to answer multiple choice questions related to their course.

Nursing Society president Natalie Elliott spoke of the importance of helping students during this difficult time.

She said: “We’re obviously not able to support students face to face, so social media seems the best way to go and we just want people to know that we’re still here for them.

The idea behind ‘Revision Hour’ was just a way of us showing that even at home, we can still learn. Doing four questions a day might not seem like a lot but it will help students to keep on top of their studies.”

The second year Nursing (Adult) student, added: “Just because we’re on lockdown doesn’t mean life has to stop. It’s important to keep doing exercise, which then has a positive impact on mental health.

The society also wants to act as a bridge of communication between staff and students and encourage everyone to listen to official channels for picking up news - rather than rumours or speculation.”

Natalie also spoke about the recent news of 500 GCU third year students heading out to the frontline across Scotland.

She said: “We are super proud of them – it’s absolutely incredible and we wish them the best of luck.

It shows this is what they were made for and it’s also a credit to the education and training from GCU staff because students obviously feel confident enough to make that commitment.”

Natalie added: “It’s also a key quality for nurses to think ethically and we are equally proud of those who opted to stay at home with their loved ones during these unprecedented times.”
