A GCU student has written an article in support of Remembrance Day, which has now been published online by the National Trust for Scotland!

2nd year Social Sciences student Esme Allen decided to submit her article after hearing about a student programme which was run by the National Trust. Once Esme found out more about the programme, she was instantly interested in taking part.

Esme’s article discussed two First World War posters, which were both designed to promote funding for a Scottish National War Memorial after the First World War.

Esme was initially nervous about submitting her article. She said: “I was quite anxious to write the article, as the National Trust for Scotland is a large organisation and I wanted to make sure my writing was of a high standard.

I knew the article would be read by people I didn’t know so I spent hours researching, writing and retouching my piece.”

The topic of Remembrance Day is very personal to Esme. She said: “Remembrance Day holds a special place in my heart. From years spent listening to stories from both of my great-grandmothers about the struggles of wartime, I am in touch with my own family history and legacy.

The 11th of November is a day for reflection and, personally, a chance to appreciate the present day.”

She added: “I would love to write more articles in the future! There is nothing more gratifying than reading a final draft of work and sharing it with my family and friends.

As a first experience of writing a published article, I can say it has been an extremely rewarding experience and I encourage others to try something new and out of their comfort zone.”
