GCU law students launch their first student led podcast
GCU law students have teamed up to create a student-led podcast, including discussions from experts in the legal profession.
3rdand 4th year GCU LLB Law students Lucy MacKay and Eisa Mahmood, who have the roles of Student Director and Media Manager within the GCU Law Clinic , have recently hosted their first episode which featured an interview with author and activist Jemma Neville, who talks about her book Constitution Street.
The idea for the GCU Law Podcast was initially discussed during the Women In Law project; a successful student led project which was created last year. Lucy explained that the idea to start working on the project was suggested during the lockdown period. She said: “We wanted to develop podcasts with a variety of different guests discussing legal issues.
As a podcast was something I had been really keen to do at the Clinic, I thought this was a great idea and from that point we began to plan next steps.
For our first podcast Seonaid (Lecturer in Law at GCU) applied to the Scottish Book Trust for funding to conduct a remote Live Literature event, which allowed us to interview Jemma Neville about her brilliant book, Constitution Street.”
She added: “Our next few episodes are specifically aimed at Freshers who are starting out on their law degree in October. We want the episodes to provide advice for those starting out their journey, showcasing different paths that can be taken from a law degree and generally to make the experience of beginning a law degree a less intimidating one.”
Eisa believes that the podcasts will be very helpful in providing insight into the profession. He said: “I personally believe it is incredibly effective as it allows the students to listen in first-hand to experts talking about the legal field and most importantly giving useful advice to young law students.
It is an easy way to gain information from experts without the trouble of searching endlessly for clear advice on what to do next as a law student.”
With the induction week approaching, the students have been planning episodes aimed at helping new law students starting at the university. They said: “We have a podcast ready to go up for everyday of induction week. After this, we plan to continue recording and releasing episodes along the same theme – always focused on providing useful information for our students!
As well as this, we are always brainstorming ideas and have many in the pipeline which we hope to plan and record later in the year.”
