GCU is set to host a prestigious national comedy event giving students the opportunity to sample the finest up-and-coming Scottish talent.

The Chortle Student Comedy Awards heat will be taking place at the Re:Union Bar and Grill on Monday, March 9 - with tickets priced at just £3.30 for students.

Previous participants include household names, such as; Iain Stirling, Joe Lycett, Simon Bird, Chris Ramsay and Lauren Pattison

GCU's very own Chrissy Ross will be hosting the night and believes it's too good an opportunity for students to miss out on.

He said: “The who’s who of comedy currently on television had a go at the Chortle Student Comedy Awards, so to be holding this is a big deal for the Re:Union Bar and university.

We are one of only two venues in Scotland chosen to be hosting the heats alongside St Andrews. To be picked over Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Dundee is a big win for Glasgow and also shows how good an events space we have right here on campus.”

Chrissy, who’s in his fourth year studying International Events, added: “People coming along on the night are going to see the very best of student comedy in Scotland and they’ll definitely be surprised by the standard.”

Re:Union Bar Assistant Manager Toni Jones, also explained the benefits of hosting the big night.

She said: “We are limited due to our size however it works in our favour as we become an intimate venue, which definitely benefits events like Celtic Connections and comedy gigs.

Not everyone realises that we are actually a public bar, so hosting this will give us more exposure to both current students and those outwith GCU. It will definitely be a great night for everyone involved – so I’d definitely encourage people to get along if they can!”
