GCU PhD student is awarded a financial grant from highly recognised organisation

A GCU PhD student has been recently awarded with the Water Science Bursary: a competitive grant given to researchers that engage with the study of chemical and water sciences.

The bursary, which is provided by the RSC (Royal Society of Chemistry), is designed to support members of the society who are undertaking water science research at an early stage of their career.

PhD student Jamie Harrower applied for the £950 grant to help fund his research, which focuses on “the occurrence and chemical behaviour of antibiotics in the environment, using analytical techniques and multimedia modelling”.

Jamie is very grateful for being awarded the bursary. He said: “I feel great. I have received 4 financial awards for my work in my PhD so far.

This work will help me with the costs of all my field and lab work.”

For those studying in the chemistry field, Jamie recommends joining the RSC. He said: “It’s an amazing organisation, with a huge amount of opportunities and links into industry.

I have met some amazing scientists from all over the world through the RSC, which has given me great opportunities and opened up many doors."
