Sustainable food event to provide perfect recipe for students

Human Nutrition and Dietetics students are set to treat GCU with a feast of information at a sell-out event next week.

The Sustainable Food ABC workshop will take place in the Charles Oakley Building on Wednesday February 12 between 2pm and 4pm.

Delivered by GCU’s Dietetics Society and Common Good Society, the event forms part of a wider initiative which looks to increase awareness of our diets, food systems and waste through a social media campaign and cookbook – which is due to launch this summer.

Elaine Penman, one of the students behind the delivery of the campaign, explained the inspiration around Sustainable Food ABC.

She said: “GCU has a sustainable food policy, which is really around catering on campus. Our idea was to take this concept and encourage students to think about what they buy, cook and throw outside of University.

On the day, we’ll have a BBC Good Food writer, Sumayya Usmani from Kaleyard Cook School explaining how to be more sustainable in the kitchen and demonstrating how to make a comprehensive meal from store cupboard essentials and leftover food. Dr Jennie Jackson, a former lecturer at GCU, will also be delivering a sustainable diet talk, which focuses on the small steps you can take each day to make a big impact on the environment.”

Douglas Livingston, President of the Dietetics Society, added that the popularity of the topic has helped the event sell out weeks before the date.

He explained: “This is obviously an important subject globally, spearheaded by younger people, most notably Greta Thunberg. It’s an area that is vital to society - so it’s really important to provide students with information on how they can make positive changes and ultimately make a difference to the environment around them.”
