What’s involved?

GCU Wellbeing and GCU Students’ Association will deliver the Look After Your Mate workshops.

The workshops, developed by Student Minds, aim to provide you with knowledge and confidence in supporting friends experiencing mental health difficulties whilst looking after their own well-being and the support available for you and other GCU students.

Student attendees will be asked to attend and complete a workshop, after which they will receive a certificate documenting they have completed the course. Students will also be asked to complete a short evaluation form following the workshop to help us continue to improve the content.

How will participating in this activity/opportunity allow students to make a positive difference in the communities that we serve?

The workshop's main focus is to educate and empower GCU students to better understand mental health and wellbeing, support others while maintaining boundaries, and signpost when appropriate.

Peer support and education around mental health (also called mental health literacy) are key enablers in constructing inclusive and supportive communities alongside challenging mental health stigma.

What are the benefits of taking part in this activity/opportunity for participating students?

The workshop encourages students to engage with their own mental health and well-being and develop a range of skills to help support others whilst having a clear understanding of boundaries. The course will also engage students in understanding different types of support available, how experiences can impact student mental health, and how to signpost to these resources. These skills will benefit all aspects of life, including personal relationships, careers, leadership, group work and more.

Attending this workshop is a fantastic experience, and we provide a certificate which could be included on a CV. Students will be able to develop empathy and confidence in supporting others, building an inclusive, supportive ethos for communities with mental well-being.
