Summary of content
The aim of this module is to develop the academic, analytical and reflective skills required of students transitioning from professional practice to academic researchers. The module is split into two parts, 1. academic skills and 2. reflective practice.
In part 1, students will explore all aspects of academic skills such as academic writing and oral communication, critical appraisal and other skills such as analysis & problem solving, research & information management, self-management & work habits. The purpose of part 1, is to equip students with the appropriate skillset to embark on study at a professional doctorate level. To begin the process of carefully and systematically, supporting the needs of practitioners as they transition to academic study. Students will broadly identify a work-based problem, explore key sources of literature, and critically appraise their selected topic.
Part 2, considers the role of reflective practice in the academic journey. Students will explore models of reflection for example, ERA cycle (Jasper, 2013), Driscoll’s What model; Kolb’s (1984) Experiential Learning, Gibb’s Reflective Cycle- exploring the benefits and disadvantages. This is developed via academic reflective writing exploring tools such as journals, logbooks, and diaries. There will also be a strong focus on working effectively with their peers. Students will be equipped with the knowledge and tools which will enable them to analyse their experiences and actions to continuously improve and engage in a process of continuous learning
