Summary of content

This module operates a 50% overall pass rate.

This module reviews the Health and Safety legislative framework within which construction and engineering projects are carried out. However, the emphasis will be on abstracting the fundamental and universal principle of sound risk management upon which the legislation is based. The module next reviews hazardous processes from a site management perspective and outlines best-practice management processes which should be implemented by individual managers and project organisations in order to control these risks. The student is next introduced to the topic of health and in particular will address the problems of noise, hand arm vibration, backpain, asbestosis, skin and respiratory problems. Also, students will review health surveillance schemes and the ways in which these can be introduced over the next decade. The module concludes by reviewing Safety Management Systems which are seen as a structured method of integrating all of the foregoing elements of the module. This will introduce the concepts of training, behavioural safety and safety culture in addition to recognised management Safety Management Systems such as BS800 and international accredited Safety Management Systems (OHSAS 18001).
