Trimester A (September start)

Summary of content

This long-thin module builds on the work done in level 2 of the BA Multimedia Journalism, by giving students the opportunity to develop specialist skills for working in a number of recognised journalistic areas where additional, specialist reporting skills are required. Areas of study include court reporting, business, investigative journalism, social affairs, sport, health and international journalism. The course also includes further preparation and news production to prepare students for sitting the NCTJ prelim exam in Reporting and preparing their NCTJ e-portfolio, and voicework to meet BJTC accreditation requirements. Most assignments will be produced for newspapers/online, but there will be the option to re-tool some of them for broadcast media as appropriate as part of the co-requisite long-thin module Newsdays, and these versions may be submitted in addition or substitutionally in this module, subject to the module leader's agreement. Any student who goes on the programme's approved one trimester exchange abroad in L3 of the programme, trimester A only, will be required to complete half the assessments only, but which must include at least one court assignment. Students will be required to provide notes on their sources and ethical/legal issues confronted within each story/assessment, and demonstrate reflection on these via their assessed online continuous reflective journal, with tutor involvement.
