Department of Economics and Law

Our department brings together academics with interests and expertise in economics and law. We lead an extensive range of modules, undergraduate and postgraduate courses.  All of this activity is underpinned and enhanced by research and consultancy undertaken by members of the department.

Research

Economics reflects our school research strengths in gender and feminist economic analysis and its interconnection with public policy as well as emergent research strengths in migration, economic inequality, social justice and globalisation. Theoretically informed and research-led teaching, with gender and equalities as underpinning analytical approaches, responds to the recent discursive turn in economics and public policy globally as the political and policy narrative and institutions increasingly engage in tackling the global inequalities gap. Our world-renowned research centre- The WiSE Centre for Economic Justice - established in October 2010, takes an innovative, multidisciplinary approach to the analysis of economic, social and public policy. WiSE is the intellectual home to a growing group of GCU academics from a variety of disciplines including economics, political science, sociology, history, law and risk who are committed to building an international reputation as a centre of excellence under the broad theme of economic justice.

GCU Law researchers cover a wide range of topics including international human rights law, legal theory, criminal law, forensic science, the legal profession, health care law, ethics and delict.

Law Society

Accredited by the Law Society of Scotland as a provider of the LLB, Bachelor of Laws, which, together with other training, is the main route for entry to the legal profession. The main aim is to provide our students with knowledge and understanding and a  confident approach to the legal system and law of Scotland. You will develop your legal knowledge and skills through the study of core areas of private, public, criminal and commercial law. Our vibrant course has excellent staff/student ratios focused on providing individualised attention to students and their progress.

We also enjoy strong connections with the legal community, with students participating in regular events and training to improve their academic experience, legal skills and employability.

LLB students are provided with the opportunity to enhance their professional practice skills through our award-winning Glasgow Caledonian University Law Clinic. The GCU Law Clinic enables LLB students to provide advice on civil law matters under the supervision of qualified and practising solicitors. Specialising in housing, employment, contract and sports law, the GCU Law Clinic is open to all LLB students who wish to volunteer.

Previous GCU LLB graduates have secured employment as solicitors in a wide range of law firms, including the largest and best-known firms in Scotland. Others practise as solicitors in local government and in the Crown Office and Procurator Fiscal Service. Some of our graduates have chosen to practise as Scottish qualified solicitors elsewhere in Europe, working within private firms and within the public sector.
