Freshers' week

Freshers 2021 Coming Soon

Freshers' Week takes place every September to welcome our new students to GCU and this year runs from Monday 20th September to Friday 24th September 2021.

This year we will also be welcoming our second year students to attend Freshers’ Week as they missed out last year due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Working in partnership with GCU Students’ Association, we have a week of exciting activities planned and can’t wait to welcome you onto campus.

Timetabled Freshers’ Experience

In order to keep you safe and control the number of people on campus at any one time, you will be allocated a two hour Freshers’ Experience slot on your induction timetable as per your programme of study.

You can access your induction timetable via the GCU website or via our Welcome App.

How do I find my Freshers Experience on my induction timetable?

Search for your programme and level of study on your induction timetable

For example, if you’re first year undergraduate student studying Multimedia Journalism, you would select the timetable labelled “1FTA, BA(Hons) Multimedia Journalism”. If you’re a third year direct entry undergraduate student studying Social Sciences, you would select the timetable labelled “3FTA, BA(Hons) Social Sciences”.

Once you’ve accessed your induction timetable, search for your Freshers’ slot. It will be timetabled for two hours and will be labelled “Induction – Freshers 2021 Event” and should also say “Room: Outdoors”. If your slot is 2pm – 4pm on Monday 20th September on your timetable then that is when you should attend your Freshers’ experience.

Where will my Freshers’ Experience take place?

Your Freshers’ Experience will take place outdoors on the main campus concourse outside the Hamish Wood Building and George Moore Building.

There will be Student Ambassadors at the main entrances to the University to check you in and assign you a Freshers’ wristband applicable to your time slot.

You will also be asked to scan a QR code for track and trace purposes so we advise that you download a QR scanner on your phone.

What can I expect from my Freshers’ experience?

We have lots of exciting activities planned for you during your Freshers’ Experience.

Freshers’ Market: freebies and giveaways galore from big names such as Dominos as well as a chance to find out more about the GCU Student’s Association’s sports clubs and societies

Live music stage: embrace the Freshers’ vibe with live music and sets from local bands and DJs

Freshers’ pods: chill out with your new classmates at our Freshers pods located on our rooftop garden in the Sir Alex Ferguson Library

Photo stations: set your Instagram feed alight by grabbing some snaps at our photo stations located across campus including our blossom tree and giant deckchair.

Please note that all students will receive the same Freshers’ Experience regardless of their time slot.

What guidelines are in place to ensure my health and safety?

We understand that many students may still have concerns around the transmission of the coronavirus.

Hosting our Freshers’ Experience outdoors and controlling the numbers of students on campus at any one time, gives us a greater chance of reducing transmission.

We will also be regularly cleaning our activity stations throughout the day and students will be asked to sign in upon arrival for track and trace purposes.

Please note: our campus events are subject to change in accordance with the Scottish Governmentguidance regarding Covid-19.

Students’ Association Events

As well as your timetabled Freshers’ slot, our Students Association also have a number of events planned throughout the week including their virtual Freshers’ Fair, a comedy night, Drag Bingo with the Bingo Babes and a Freshers Week Quiz
