Semester and year-long exchange

How does it work?

Students can apply in their second year to go on exchange in their third year of study to one of our partner universities. You will not pay tuition fees to the partner university and must apply to SAAS or your other funding provider as normal.

1. Research

Join our GCU Learn organisation, Exchange & Study Abroad, to find out about the options available for your course. Please be aware that these are updated before each application round. We also recommend that you attend any exchange presentations organised by your school.

Think about what you want from your exchange experience and take some time to visit our partner universities’ websites to find out about courses and student life.

Don’t limit yourself to destinations you are instantly drawn to, an exchange at one of our partners in a location you hadn’t previously thought about might be perfect for you!

You will need to take the equivalent number of credits per semester. 30 ECTS for European exchanges.

2. Apply

We have two application rounds. For exchanges starting in Trimester A, B and for year long the applications open in February.  Direct Entry and Pathways students are able to apply for exchange from September. For each application round the exact application dates and destinations available will be advertised on GCU Learn.

As well as the online application, you will need to submit:

  • Copy of your passport (covering the expected dates of exchange + 6 months)
  • Motivation letter of 500 words maximum telling us why you want to go one exchange and what you will gain from it.
  • Destination choice form signed by your academic exchange coordinator (a list is available on our community). We will try our best to offer students one of their top 3 choices, however this isn’t always possible.
  • Written permission and evidence that your school support you taking part in exchange based on good academic standing (this is not required for Direct Entry/Pathways students)

To apply, please join our Exchange & Study Abroad organisation on GCU Learn.

3. Results

Students will be informed of the outcome of their application a maximum of 2 weeks after the application deadline. You will then be nominated to the exchange university who will contact you with details of their application.

4. Support

The Exchange Office is here to support you throughout the process, from the initial application process, to arriving home after completing your semester or year abroad. We will hold a range of meetings throughout your exchange journey, including information sessions, 1-2-1 meetings and a pre-departure briefing.

If you would like to speak to a member of our team about you options, please Contact Us providing your student ID and programme of study.

Where can you go?

At GCU we have over 100 partners in 27 countries! From Austria to Vietnam, we’re confident our students will find an exchange which appeals to them.

Exchange opportunities fall under two main categories; European and International.
