Although most veterans successfully transition back into civilian life after their time in the Armed Forces, some individuals can find it difficult to do so. The Veteran’s Employment Strategy Group, established by the Scottish Government in 2017, identified key skills gaps and barriers to employment for veterans. To address these barriers and gaps, and improve veteran participants’ long-term job prospects, the project has two related aims:

  • To introduce a Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) approved assessor within the progressive employment training programme of Scotland’s Bravest Manufacturing Company (SBMC), a social enterprise established by Royal British Legion Industries in 2018 (delivered by SBMC).
  • To conduct an independent evaluation to explore the impact of the programme on the long-term job prospects, confidence levels, attainment of recognised SQA qualifications, work readiness, employability and mental health of the veterans participating in the programme (delivered by GCU). The evaluation will adopt a mixed-methods approach, employing quantitative and qualitative tools to explore the impact of the intervention.
