  • Confidence
  • Responsible leadership

What’s involved?

The Widening Participation and Outreach department at Glasgow Caledonian provides outreach, widening participation, articulation and transition support within partner schools, colleges and for our care-experienced or estranged students. Student Mentors are given the opportunity to work for all three teams within the department.

Student Mentors working for GCU Connect support school pupils at key stages in their secondary school education. We work in partnership with 30 secondary schools, supporting senior school pupils with the application and transition to Glasgow Caledonian University and younger students at key decision-making stages.

Student Mentors working for College Connect help increase young people's confidence, skills and life-long learning aspirations and help college students transition to GCU. The Team provides support and advice for articulating HNC/HND students transitioning from partner colleges to GCU.

Student Mentors working for the Caledonian Club support young people and their families to raise lifelong learning aspirations, build key life skills and provide unique learning opportunities. We work with children and young people in communities in Glasgow, delivering a range of project-based activities in school and on campus.

How will participating in this activity/opportunity allow students to make a positive difference in the communities that we serve?

GCU Connect: Working with school pupils in and around Glasgow allows our Student Mentors to make a difference in the communities GCU serves, many of which are located in areas of multiple deprivation and have lower-than-average progression statistics to higher education.

College Connect: Student Mentors act as role models and GCU ambassadors, delivering a wide range of activities to increase young people's confidence, core skills and lifelong learning aspirations and help college students transition to GCU or higher education.

Caledonian Club:  We work with young people in primary school and their families to raise lifelong learning aspirations and equip members with key life skills. We achieve this by offering targeted nursery, primary and secondary schools a linked set of activities delivered by staff and Student Mentors from GCU.
