Funding for full-time postgraduate students
If you start a full-time or part-time master’s course in Scotland and you are Scottish domiciled, you can apply for a postgraduate loan from SAAS for eligible courses. You’ll be able to borrow up to £11,500 in total to pay your fees and help with living costs. .
Only EU nationals who are ‘settled’ or ‘pre-settled’ in the UK will remain eligible to apply for home tuition fees providing they meet the residency conditions. Some European Economic Area (EEA) and Swiss nationals will be eligible if they meet residency conditions.
Irish nationals who are living in the Common Travel Area of the UK, Islands or Ireland and started a course of study in Scotland from session 2021-2022 will be entitled to apply to SAAS for funding. The funding available depends on your residence eligibility
Distance Learning – courses undertaken at a non-campus based institutions such as Open University may be eligible for funding, providing they meet all other rules of the scheme.
Students from England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Ireland need to apply to their own local education authority for funding support to study in Scotland.
Research master's courses are not funded unless there is a taught element.
Pre-registration nursing courses are not funded through the postgraduate loan scheme.
Home students
International students
International students who are asylum seekers, or who have had to extend their visa, or have been financially affected by global conflict arising in their home country since starting their course, and are struggling financially with unexpected costs due to these circumstances, should make an appointment to speak to a Funding Adviser and discuss your current situation.
If you are an international or EU student who does not fall under the above category and you are experiencing extreme financial difficulty, please contact the Student Funding Team to see how we can support you further.
EU students
SAAS applications are open for session 2025-26 for EU continuing students who started their course before academic year 2020-21. For information on recent changes to EU funding, please visit the SAAS EU pages.
In order to be eligible for this fund you must be:
An EU national who is eligible for full living cost support from SAAS
An EU national who is struggling financially, with protected rights, who is eligible for tuition fees only, and who was here by the end of 2020 (with pre-settled status but who hasn’t been in the UK for three years).
