Overview

Today’s news is instant, constant and fast-paced. It’s consumed across TV and radio streaming, podcasts, social media and traditional print. To succeed, you need to respond quickly and produce engaging, accurate and ethical stories that make an impact across a range of platforms.

The MA Multimedia Journalism prepares you for this fast-paced and constantly evolving media landscape. You’ll build the practical skills, technical expertise and editorial judgement needed to thrive in a modern newsroom.

Designed for aspiring journalists from a range of academic backgrounds, the course offers hands-on training across writing, filming, audio production and digital storytelling.

From the start, you’ll work in a newsroom-style environment, developing core skills in reporting, interviewing and feature writing. You’ll build your expertise across multimedia production, including video, audio and digital storytelling. Alongside this, you’ll study shorthand, media law and public affairs, as well as areas such as data journalism. This gives you a strong foundation and the confidence to work across different platforms and adapt to industry change.

You’ll train in GCU’s purpose-built, industry-standard facilities. These include:

  • a multimedia newsroom
  • TV studio
  • radio studios
  • digital production suites.

Your learning will be shaped by experienced journalists, many of whom are still active in the industry. Guest speakers and alumni bring additional insight from across the sector. You’ll gain a clear understanding of what employers are looking for while building a strong professional network.

You’ll also benefit from our strong industry links, including major news organisations. Based in Glasgow, Scotland’s ‘media city’, you’ll be well placed to access opportunities across the sector. As part of the course, you’ll complete a minimum of ten days’ work experience with a media organisation. This gives you direct exposure to the industry and helps you graduate ready to work.

As Scotland's only accredited postgraduate journalism degree – and one of only a handful in the UK accredited by both the NCTJ and the BJTC, this course gives you recognised, industry-relevant credentials. You’ll graduate with a portfolio of work and the skills to succeed across the global media industry - ready to inform, connect and confidently start your career as a journalist.
