Summary of content

Global Media Industries presents a case study approach to the core concepts shaping the digital media landscape today.

The case studies presented will examine the ongoing digitalization of content online via several case studies across different media platforms and genres or practices. Students will be introduced or consolidate their understanding of several core concepts including: globalization, deterritorialization, digitalization, convergence, platformization, authenticity, regulation, interactivity, simulation and deep fakes.

Through examination of case study examples across video, music, TV, social media, publishing, personal data and education, students will study how the core concepts have manifested themselves in our lives today.

The module emphasises a concept-led approach to understanding the networked and social mediatization of people today, and seeks to lay an intellectual foundation for the case studies within the module and across the programme as a whole. The capacity and continuing changing negotiation of power and capital, public and private, state and the individual form a core part of the thinking in this module and it aims to equip students with the analytical insights to be able to understand digital media and its multimodal communicative power.

This module also examines core concepts shaping today's digital media landscape through an inclusive, critical lens. Case studies across platforms and genres analyse issues of representation, access, and power differentials. Assignments challenge assumptions and biases in how technology permeates social mediatization. Students emerge with skills to evaluate new media through frameworks of equality, diversity, and social justice.
