Tabitha Nyariki - Vice President for School of Health and Life Sciences - GCU Students’ Association

Tabitha Nyariki was recently elected as Vice President (SHLS) and started her role with GCU Students’ Association at the beginning of June.

We caught up with Tabitha, discussing everything from the GCU student experience through to her love for Nandos...

How does it feel to be representing students at GCU in your new role as Vice President?


“It’s a good feeling when you’re a student and then you’re able to come in and represent others. I feel like I have a good idea around what students need and want – so I’m just looking forward to it all.”


How excited are you to be working with the School of Health and Life Sciences?


“I’m really looking forward to it. I was part of the school for three years and it was a very good experience during my time there. I’m pleased to be working with people who I understand and who I can speak to freely around any issues.”


What are you looking forward to working on over the next year?


“I’ve obviously been through it, so I’ve had the student experience and know what has worked well and what’s been lacking from it. I’m just hoping to improve it, particularly now when the student experience is going to look pretty different. I’ll also be working on my manifesto points and trying to deliver on them as much as possible.

It’s also important to make sure students continue to be aware of Black Lives Matter and that, as a university, we continue to have a focus on equality and diversity in everything we do.”

What did you study at GCU?

“BSc Applied Psychology”


What did you always want to be when you were growing up?

“My dream job is to be a pilot – it would be great to get paid for travelling around the world. Someone told me about how I could get a private pilot’s license, so maybe that’s something I’ll look in to in future!”


Favourite film/TV show?

“I’ve re-watched Big Bang Theory enough during lockdown for it to be my favourite one. I had never watched the US Office and I started that because someone tried to convince me it’s the greatest show in the world. It’s probably a close second to Big Bang Theory but it was never going to overtake it.


What is your favourite food?

“I always eat chicken – I think I was one of the first people to order a Nando’s when they started doing deliveries!”


If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be and why?

“It has to be somewhere warm. I would probably choose somewhere fancy like Bora Bora because it would be like you were on holiday every single day!”
