Climate Justice student makes it to the final of a major academic writing competition
A GCU student has successfully made it to the final of a national academic writing competition with her impressive essay submission.
MSc Climate Justice student Meg Taintor decided to enter her essay into the UK PRME Writing Competition when she submitted it as part of a module and wanted to investigate further.
The UK PRME Writing Competition is a prestigious academic writing competition which is open to Undergraduate and Postgraduate students across the UK.
After submitting her essay, lecturers were so impressed that they encouraged Meg to enter the competition. She said: “My essay was titled ‘Common Concerns and Mutual Responsibility: Investigating the Roles of Developed and Developing States in the Fight Against Climate Change.’
It was part of my coursework for my Climate Change and Carbon Management module, taught by Professor Désiré Ruragaragaza and Professor Rohinton Emmanuel. The prompt for the coursework was to attempt to negotiate the friction between the needs of developing nations to develop against that very real need to limit global emissions.
Rohinton reached out to me in January after the coursework was assessed and encouraged me to submit it to the competition, which was quite flattering.”
Despite writing about an unfamiliar topic, Meg was delighted that her essay was so well received. She said: “It's quite flattering, and more than a little strange! The topic for the essay was so far out of my comfort zone (my background is arts and humanities, so I've never tried to theorize about international policy before) so the research process for the essay was quite illuminating.
I would say I raised more questions for myself than I answered. I guess that's the best thing you can hope for in a Masters programme - being pushed into new learning environments and figuring out how to navigate them.”
She added: “It felt really great to have the success of making it to the final of the competition and earning a finalist position!”
