Journey to GCU: Georgi Smith

Here at GCU Student Life, we’re looking to showcase our diverse range of students with our brand new #JourneytoGCU campaign.  

We’ll be focusing on the various routes students have taken to study with us here at our city centre campus, as well as finding out a bit more about them on a personal level.  

Today we’re focusing on BSc Radiotherapy and Oncology student Georgi Smith, who is also Department Rep for Podiatry and Radiography:

Where are you from?  

“I was originally born in Norwich but I’ve been in Glasgow for the last ten years - in Airdrie, specifically.” 

 
What did you want to be when you were growing up? 

“A lot of things! Marine Biologist was the first thing that springs to mind after I was told I was too short to pursue a dancing career.” 

How did you come to study at GCU?  

“I was looking for a new career after a few failures along the way. I've been a journalist, beauty therapist, video editor and some in between jobs around customer service. GCU had some great links with my college access course and my course tutors were a great source of information when I was investigating different options.” 

What made you want to study your subject? 

“I wanted to combine my interest in biology and health with my experience of working with and for people!” 

What appealed to you about studying in Glasgow? 

“The two things that appealed to me were good train links and the fact it was local to me - nothing too exciting.” 

Favourite thing about studying at GCU? 

“There is so much going on at GCU to get involved with and lots of opportunities to build experiences. GCU isn't afraid to tackle current issues and make changes to make it an inclusive and modern University.”
