GCU student joins friends on a 1014-mile cycling journey in aid of Breast Cancer UK

GCU student has teamed up with his friends to take part in a 1014-mile cycle in aid of Breast Cancer UK.

4th year Computer-Aided Mechanical Engineering student Matthew Duguid came together with his friends to raise money for their friend Owen; whose mother battled and overcame breast cancer last year.

The group of friends, who are based in Stonehaven, have set themselves the challenge of cycling from “Brickfield to Bratislava” and separating the journey into 50-mile stages.

Matthew was happy to get involved in support of his friend. He said: “I decided to join in on the cycle because last year my friend’s mum was diagnosed with cancer and she beat it.

When he suggested raising money by cycling the distance of Brickfield to Bratislava, a group of us decided we would add to the distance by cycling 50-mile stages.”

He added: “When I asked him why the journey was called ‘Brickfield to Bratislava’ he said it had a good ring to it!”

Matthew has described the challenge so far as being “the most difficult things that I have done”. He said: “The cycle was very hard going. The longest cycle I have did prior to this was only 5 miles and I wouldn't consider myself as much of a cyclist so it was a large jump.

The route we decided on went over Cairn o’ Mount which is a hill range of about 450m and the 2 mile stretch to the top was up there with the most difficult things that I’ve done.”
