Third time lucky for Occupational Therapy student

A GCU student is celebrating after finally getting to tie the knot. 

Third year Occupational Therapy student Amanda Young and partner Steven were all set for their dream wedding in Corfu, until coronavirus complications meant the big event had to be cancelled on two separate occasions.  

Thankfully, last month brought a change of fortune – along with a change of venue. 

Amanda explained: “We had our hearts set on a two-week holiday with all our family and friends and waited a year and a half with postponements, so we were just desperate to do it! With all the travel hassle, we decided it was easier to get married in Scotland at Cornhill Castle, Biggar.  

I waited ten years for a proposal, so I definitely wasn’t giving up!” 

After the obvious disappointment of a double cancellation, both Steven and Amanda made sure they arrived in style for the big day. 

Amanda said: “The beginning of the day was a bit touch-and-go, Steven was coming in by helicopter, which was dependent on the weather. We didn’t know until an hour before the ceremony if he would be able to be flown in or not – thankfully he was! 

I stayed at the venue the night before but he surprised me with a vintage Bentley. My Papa, who’s now passed away, had a personalised registration plate and Steven arranged to get it put on the car, which was a nice extra touch.” 

There was a total of 200 guests at the castle throughout the course of the day - and there was a particularly important role for one special individual. 

Amanda explained: “Steven and I don’t have any kids of our own, so Ruby was our “Dog of Honour” – we had to get her involved!” 

She added: “All our nieces and nephews were also there and we hired special wedding teepees for them.  

At night there were fireworks and music from a band called ‘Clanadonia’, who have performed at T in The Park and the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. They play the pipes and drums and it was really nice to have that Scottish feel there on the day.  

Everybody seemed to really enjoy themselves and we both had a great time.” 

After an evening of entertainment, the newlyweds then left Biggar behind to make sure they got their fix of some well-deserved sunshine. 

Amanda said: “We flew straight out after the wedding for five nights in Lanzarote. The weather was amazing, so we were very lucky. In the end it definitely all worked out!”
