Students fundraise for national women support group as part of their university project

A team of students decided to campaign for a national female support charity as part of their university module – resulting in over £500 being raised overall!

The EEE2 module, which is designed to build teamwork, leadership and enterprising skills, challenged the students to work with a community organisation or charity which helps promote the Common Good.

The International Business With Languages student team, who decided to campaign for Rape Crisis Scotland, consisted of Jordan Barr, Caitlin Barrie, Iona Elizabeth Johnston, Rachael Lambert, Jenna Elizabeth Lynn and Victoria Catherine McGregor.

2nd year student Jordan Barr, said that their team chose the charity due to their personal connection with it. He said: “The charity is very close to all our hearts but specifically to one member.
The charity has helped one of our team members by providing support and advice through a challenging time.

It is for this reason that the team want to raise awareness of the work Rape Crisis Scotland do and try to give back to the charity. There has also been a yearly increase in sexual crimes in Scotland.”

Jordan and his team managed to raise £500 when the EEE2 module finished, which has since increased to over £600. The team also managed to reach 66,383 people across social media as part of their campaign.

He added: “The point of the project was to make us agree on an issue that was socially concerning for us and come up with an innovative solution to do something about it.

We decided we would do a sponsored hill climb to the Conic Hills to fundraise for the charity, as well as raise awareness using our social media channels .We also set up a JustGiving page that could be accessed by many people, particularly once we had used our combined social media following to attract donations and page shares.

Whilst the majority of the world is in shutdown due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, Rape Crisis Scotland is still continuing to provide support to those dealing with abuse and this is the message we wanted to get out.”
