Climate Justice student triumphs in prestigious writing competition

A GCU student has been awarded first prize in a prestigious writing competition, aimed at undergraduate and postgraduate students.

MSc Climate Justice student Kathleen Pineau triumphed in the PRME Responsible Business and Management Writing Competition and was given first place (which includes a £500 prize) in the postgraduate category.

Kathleen's submission explored the definition of carbon neutrality; a way of balancing carbon emissions against the removal of carbon from the atmosphere. Kathleen’s piece focused on the need to rebalance the cost of this based on those responsible for high emissions, such as air travellers.

Kathleen felt very strongly about her chosen topic and appreciated the opportunity to write about it thanks to the help of her lecturers. She said: “"I am very grateful for this opportunity given by PRME and the support from my lecturers.

Carbon neutrality is a burning issue - it is also crucial to analyse it through a climate justice lens in order to avoid any harmful effects or unethical actions being perpetrated. My article is an urgent to call for system change."

Kathleen's tutor, Professor Rohinton Emmanuel is very proud of Kathleen’s achievement. She said: "Although our students have previously participated and been shortlisted for the competition, Kathleen's entry was the first ever from the 'Carbon Management' module to win the first prize.

 I am incredibly proud of her achievement and delighted to see the importance of carbon management recognised by this prize."
