Alumnus returns to inspire future generation of Forensic Investigators

A GCU Alumnus has returned to The University to give an inspiring talk to students studying Forensic Investigation.

Graeme Mitchell, who is now a Lab Officer for the British Transport Police, graduated in 2012 from the Forensic Investigation programme and returned to speak to students about how he gained employment with the company.

Now living in London, Graeme spoke about the daunting prospect of moving far away from home, but explained that this is sometimes necessary when choosing the right job. He also discussed his work history over the past 8 years which has included working within various departments, allowing him to experience the different areas in forensic investigation.

Graeme was delighted to be back at GCU and was happy to share his advice to current students. He said “It's so nice to be back at GCU. So much has changed, but it was good to see my old lecturers and the labs that I worked in.

It's really nice to get to be able to give back to students as well, because no one came in to speak to us when I was a student to explain what a Forensic scientist actually did. It's great getting to pass on that knowledge of what I do day to day and it will hopefully inspire a future generation of Forensic scientists.”

He added: “My advice for students would be to get as much hands-on experience as they can.

The projects in university will help with that, especially lab experience which ultimately helped me decide what area I wanted to work in.”
