GCU team triumphs at a Scottish construction competition

A team of GCU students have recently won the Scottish Annual CIOB Student Challenge - an annual competition run by the Chartered Institute of Building.

The competition requires students to apply their learning to a real-world scenario of running their own virtual construction company. Students have to then complete a report based on a brief and present their ideas to a judging panel.

The GCU team were competing alongside six other institutions including Ayrshire College, Edinburgh Napier University, Heriot Watt University, South Lanarkshire College and the University of the Highlands and Islands.

This year’s brief asked students to construct a Waitrose supermarket in Inverness harbour and consider the sustainability throughout the construction phase whilst also considering a legacy for the community.  Third and final year Construction Management students Rebecca MacKenzie, Lauren Love and Jillian Millar were all part of the winning team and were presented with the Student Challenge trophy.

Programme leader of Construction Management Nigel Craig was delighted to hear that the students had won. He said “Many congratulations to Jillian, Lauren and Rebecca for winning the prestigious CIOB competition.

This is a very difficult competition to win. Every year it is a challenge to persuade students to take part in extra-curricular activities but winning competitions like this make it very worthwhile.”
