GCU hosts Battle For Glasgow E-Sports tournament for it’s fourth year
Students and volunteers from the Caledonian Chargers have hosted another successful E-Sports tournament for its fourth year.
From 23 to 25 May, the Battle For Glasgow tournament was held on the GCU campus as part of the annual competition.
The E-Sports tournament brings together teams from Glasgow Caledonian University, the University of Glasgow and the University of Strathclyde to compete in a three-day action-packed competition to crown the best university E-Sports team.
The origins of the Battle For Glasgow tournament date from the pandemic, where Caledonian Chargers members decided to create the live E-Sporting event in a larger scale.
“BFG (Battle For Glasgow) started in a basement gaming bar in 2019.,
After the pandemic, Diego and William who are both GCU Alumni, decided to rebuild BFG and bring it to a stage. Our goal was to create something that gave anyone the chance to gain real experience in a live event setting.
Most volunteering roles don’t let you make mistakes and learn from them which is our core philosophy at BFG. Looking back at the past four BFGs, we are proud to say we achieved that,” explained Caledonian Chargers member and tournament volunteer Scott Crawford.
The event, which is open to spectators and broadcasted online, saw 46 volunteers come together to help organise the tournament from across seven departments.
Scott added: “The volunteers were from all different stages of life and we had volunteers travel in from Bulgaria, Slovenia and even Pittsburgh!”
As well as having the three E-Sports teams and members of the audience, the tournament was also joined by a panel of voice actors who have featured on popular video games.
Scott said: “Walking into C001 on the first day of setup always feels like you're returning home. It's so amazing coming back year after year and seeing so many new students volunteer have a blast working on the event.”
