Recent Multimedia Journalism Graduate Maya Amir has jumped into her future career after landing an exciting opportunity at Global's Broadcast Centre in Glasgow.

The media and entertainment group, Global, offered Maya the perfect chance to kick-start her career after recently walking across the stage as a graduate.

Maya began her university career in 2019 at Edinburgh Napier studying BA (Hons) Journalism but decided she wanted a change and took a year to herself before starting back.

She was then offered a place on GCU’s Multimedia Journalism course as a third-year direct entrant student and has enjoyed getting the chance to develop her personal and professional skills over the last two years.

We caught up with Maya to hear more about how GCU helped develop her skills and what is next for her future.

How has GCU prepared you for work in the industry?

“GCU not only taught me all the skills I needed to grow in the journalism industry, but also gave me the confidence to reach out, build contacts, network, and create connections.

“The course is very practical, which enabled me to learn software that news outlets use daily and work both behind and in front of the camera. I’ve never felt more prepared to enter Global.”

How did you find out about the internship at Global?

“My lecturer sent me over an email from the GCU Foundation about the Global internship. All the information I needed was in front of me, and I could also ask further questions. GCU has a great relationship with Global, so I was given the opportunity to apply.

“The great thing about the Multimedia Journalism course is the guidance from the lecturers. They send over job and work experience opportunities to help us get a feel for the real world. Sometimes it’s hard to find jobs online, so having the university’s support is always a great help.”

What is your favourite part about this internship?

“My favourite part of the internship is working with the breakfast show. Growing up, I watched and listened to many breakfast shows, so having the opportunity to be part of one and work behind the scenes is amazing.

“I get to gather interviews and learn how the shows run — it’s so exciting.”

What advice would you give to current journalism students?

“My advice to other journalism students' is to not be scared if you’re not good at something right away or if you don’t understand it. It sounds cliché, but honestly, working hard and continuously practising is the best way to improve.

“Get out into the real world while you're still at university and explore different parts of the industry — it’ll boost your confidence in your studies too.

“There’s a lot of pressure nowadays, so make sure to have fun while you’re a student. Time truly does fly.”
