Summary of content

This module covers various aspects of social semiotics such as semiotic resources, rules and functions; dimensions of semiotic analysis, and multimodality. It contains a range of engaging examples and exercises from different media aimed at making the content of the module more accessible as well as to enhance its applicability to social and cultural phenomena. The module also looks at the development of semiotics. It helps learners develop skills necessary for assessing user experience as well as analysing texts in different communication landscapes including social media.

This module incorporates EDI principals in semiotics through an inclusive and critical lens, focusing on issues of representation, access, and systemic biases. Assignments assess media texts across communication landscapes, such as social media to reveal and challenge assumptions. Students develop skills to evaluate user experiences and textual meanings with sensitivity and understanding of marginalized perspectives. The course also emphasises applying semiotic analysis to reveal inequalities in modes of communication and meaning-making.
