Summary of content

Organisations today recognise the critical importance of developing and utilising staff capabilities. Of critical importance is the requirement to create a learning culture that drives employees’ engagement in continuing professional development so that organisations can respond to dynamic environments, change and grow. The aim of the module is to equip students in their future careers as people managers, leaders, HR professionals or HRD / learning and development specialists with a comprehensive understanding of the key concepts and practices of Human Resource Development and to examine how organisational development can be facilitated and implemented. Ensuring alignment of HRD strategies to organisational plans is critical to ensuring the realisation of the organisation’s vision and targets.

Students will be introduced to adult learning theory as well as the principles of training design. Contemporary topics such as management development, coaching & mentoring, and technology-based learning will also be examined. A section of the module will be devoted to organisational development theory and key linkages will be made between HRD and OD approaches. The module assessment combines individual and collaborative components and ensure coverage of both HRD and OD content.

Overall, the module is thus designed to help students develop the GCU Common Good Attributes of ‘Responsible Leadership’ and ‘Entrepreneurial Mind-set’ enabling them to exercise professionalism and leadership in supporting colleagues and employees to develop their skills and confidence. Delivery of the module embeds the
Principles for Responsible Management Education and aligns to UN Sustainable Development Goals - No. 4: “Quality Education”, No. 8: “Decent Work and Economic Growth”, No. 9: “Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure” and No. 11: “Sustainable Cities and Communities”.
