Summary of content
This module provides students with a critical understanding of the buying, merchandising and logistics functions within the contemporary fashion environment. Through exploration and application of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s) the following aspects are examined; associated management processes, which are explored in detail, including analysis of market trends, product concept, international sourcing, the changing role of buying and merchandising, financial planning and budgeting logistics and distribution channel decisions. The module aims to furnish students with the ability to critically examine the inter-relationships that exist between these different processes in line with GCU’s Strategy for Learning (Sfl, 2030). Particular emphasis is on global learning wherein students are encouraged to look beyond the internal view of a fashion company, i.e. its brands and services exploring the operating capability of the firm within a global context and examination of the challenges of operating globally and sustainably. In addition, responsible leadership and professionalism are also embedded within the programme content, which incorporates economic, social and environmental factors associated with sourcing, outsourcing, location of production and distribution and supplier relationship management.
Assessment Strategy: The module has two assessment components, which have been designed in accordance with GCU’s Strategy for Learning (Sfl, 2030) with particular focus on future employability and providing real world experience. Working in groups students will design and create a fashion range for a devised industry-based project with a fashion brand. The range development will encompass fashion industry current buying practice and merchandising activities from analysis of market intelligence, financial planning through to range assortment planning for both bricks and mortar and digital formats, in alignment with SDG 9, industry innovation and infrastructure.
