Summary of content
This module focuses on the evolving role of business in society. It is underpinned by a critical review of ethical theories in business from different global and stakeholder perspectives, encompassing corporate social responsibility (CSR), corporate citizenship and sustainability.
Assessing what constitutes responsible business and management behaviour becomes more challenging and relevant when an organisation operates across sectors, countries and cultures. The module provides students with a deep understanding of the evolution of CSR from competitive advantage through to contemporary arguments of sustainable development and corporate citizenship. Understanding the ‘wicked problems’ that exist in business today through a variety of global ethical lenses, students will be given tools to critically evaluate corporate efforts and claims of making a positive contribution to society, both locally and internationally.
The module provides students, prospective business managers and leaders with opportunities to explore theoretical and practical (case study) content in the context of the United Nations Global Compact, the United Nations Global Compact initiative, the Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME), and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), aligning with SDGs No 4 Quality Education; No 5 Gender Equality; No 7 Affordable and Clean Energy; No 8 Decent Work and Economic Growth; No 9 Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure; No 11 Sustainable Cities and Communities; No 13 Climate Action; No 16 Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions; No 17 Partnerships for the Goals.
