Summary of content

This module introduces students to the key elements of international operations management. It will support them to develop a critical understanding of operations management in different sectors, addressing important nuances between the service and manufacturing settings, and comparing the public and private sectors. In doing so, it will take a global perspective, drawing on examples from across the world.

After introducing operations management, supply chain management and performance, various operations techniques and approaches will be discussed, including process design and layout and capacity management. The module also addresses topics around quality and how lean management techniques can help to add value from a customer's perspective, as well as from an international organisational viewpoint. The final set of topics cover the contemporary issues surrounding business operations, sustainability and technological developments. Throughout the module, case studies and examples from around the world will be used to illustrate the topics being discussed and to stimulate student discussions and decision making.
