Summary of content

The purpose of this module is to equip students with a broad based knowledge and understanding of the nature and background of the dynamic, global fashion industry. The module introduces students to the concepts, principles and practicalities underlying the business discipline of the fashion industry. The module allows students to understand the role and scope of fashion from a transversal and holistic perspective, considering topics such as fashion design, textiles/fabrics, the circular economy and fashion sustainability within an industry based context. Furthermore, the role and use of the UN Sustainable Development Goals will be examined and applied throughout the module as set out in GCU’s Strategy for Learning (SfL, 2030) in an effort to make a positive societal impact. Hence this module, takes account of these issues throughout the teaching, while examining the globally connected value chains that exist within the fashion industry. Ultimately, the aim of the module is to equip students with the knowledge and skills to critically examine the interconnectedness of the various systems within the dynamic and fast-paced business of fashion.

The topics will include an introduction into the business of fashion, supply and value chains, circular business models, the importance of transparency in delivering sustainable development. Students will explore topics by applying concepts and theories such as the Dynamic Capabilities View (DCV), UN SDGs, Systems Thinking, Circular Economy, which will build their sustainability literacy competences and learn practical frameworks with real world application.

The global nature of the fashion industry means that all actors are affected by environmental dynamism in the shape of geo-political, economic, environmental, social and legal issues.
