Summary of content
The module develops critical appreciation of leadership and responsible leadership theory and practice in a complex and dynamic global environment. In doing so, the module considers multiple perspectives of leadership and responsible leadership, ranging from traditional to emerging theories, drawing on both theory and practice. The learning commences with a critical overview of the development of leadership theory, aiming to help students understand how leadership theory has developed over time. By developing full appreciation of the concept of leadership, students are expected to be able to critically evaluate modern challenges for organisations and recognise the need for a new model of leadership, that of responsible leadership in international and global contexts. Subsequently, the module explores approaches to developing responsible leader skills (at an individual level) and responsible leadership skills (at an organisation level) with a focus on people/HR management. For that purpose, theory on developing leadership, coaching and mentoring, as well as organisational change, organisational culture and strategic leadership are being considered, with the view of understanding how these practices and concepts can be utilised in developing responsible leadership skills throughout the organisation. Additionally, responsible leadership is examined in the context of multiple stakeholders, in the context of globalisation and dynamic environments, philanthropy, gender issues and social learning, and in the context of a digital age and leading individuals and teams remotely. Overall, the module enhances reflective and self-development skills, with an emphasis on resilience and wellbeing.
The assessment in this module is aimed at advancing integrative knowledge and understanding, bridging the theory-practice divide, developing individual responsible leadership competencies, and encouraging reflective and critical thinking at both organisational and individual student levels.
