Summary of content

In this experiential, project-based module students will develop a blueprint for a social venture. Students will investigate how social problems (connected to the SDGs) are experienced in local communities, and develop partnerships to plan a social venture aimed at addressing these problems (SDG17). This permits students to develop generic skills around team working, problem-solving and changemaking and apply to these to more specialist areas of interest. Learning will be predominantly team based which will require students to be largely self-directed and able to identify their support needs, with the aid of their academic mentors.

The practice-based approach complements theory-based teaching on the partner module: Social Innovation and Alternative Economic Forms (SIAEF). However, the module can also be taken as a stand-alone option by students on other Masters Programmes. Students will work in teams supported by academic mentors to research social problems and how they are experienced in local communities; develop and present practical solutions to these problems; adapt these solutions in response to feedback; and finally, reflect on what they have learned about social problems and their solutions via a written assignment.
