Summary of content
This module provides students with knowledge and understanding of the legal and financial instruments that influence climate action and the application of just transition frameworks in practice, with particular attention given to case law, financial structures, and policy initiatives. Students will learn common legal and financial terminology to enable a structural understanding of legislation, policy documents, finance agreements, case law, and other practical mechanisms related to climate governance and finance. Additionally, the module encourages students to engage in critical thinking and argument formation through seminars and mock debates using real-world examples of litigation and policy debates on controversial subject areas. The module is structured into three learning blocks; 'climate litigation' and 'climate finance' are taught separately as components of the final and consolidated learning block 'just transition'. The purpose of this structure is to breakdown teaching into components to allow students to understand how climate litigation and finance operate independently, before exploring the intersections between the topics under a just transition framework.
