Summary of content

The aim of this module is to enable students to become responsible employers, leaders, managers or Human Resource Professionals who can develop legally compliant, mutually beneficial and ethical interventions in response to employment issues and disputes. The module provides an extensive study and application of the legal regulation of the employment relationship in U.K. workplaces, identifying both national and international sources and principles of U.K. employment law, labour law and ethical employment relationships. Accordingly, there is a focus on the prevention of both unlawful and unethical behaviour in the employment relationship, particularly in relation to key individual employment protection provisions, equality and discrimination legislation, and collective regulation as they continue to be affected by, and applied within, contemporary environmental contexts such as Brexit, COVID-19 and the rise of the gig economy / atypical working. The processes of enforcement, arbitration and quasi legal bodies are also critically evaluated together alternative dispute resolution. Overall, the module is thus designed to help students develop the GCU Common Good Attributes of ‘Responsible Leadership’ and ‘Systems Thinking’. Delivery of the module will also embed the Principles for Responsible Management Education with particular alignment to UN Sustainable Development Goals No. 5 ‘Gender Equality’, No. 8 ‘Decent Work and Economic Growth’, No. 10 ‘Reduced Inequalities’ and No. 16 ‘Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions’.
