Summary of content

Contemporary social work is increasingly undertaken with people whose individual lived experience is informed by challenges that cut across national borders. Many who come into contact with social work services face injustice linked to forced displacement, migration, civil unrest and environmental degradation in different parts of the world. These issues precipitate problems of citizenship and protection of rights. Given this increasing complexity, social workers require an understanding of the role of environmental, political and economic factors as much as social justice in the context of a globalised world which presents new and fast moving challenges. This module will encourage students to grapple with uncertain and multifaceted concerns by providing an understanding of these issues through theory and research as well as a field work assignment which requires students to apply this knowledge to a live context.
