Summary of content
This module will promote the development of theoretical knowledge and practical skills that relate to interpersonal communication in different sociocultural situations. Social work involves meaningful interaction with people who have varied social and cultural experiences that inform their mode of communication and interaction. Students will explore a range of theories which promote an understanding of a variety of psycho-social factors which influence communication. They will also develop a critical understanding of psychotherapeutic models which inform mainstream interpersonal communication practice. In order to undertake anti-discriminatory practice students will require an understanding of the ways in which interpersonal interaction can enforce or address discriminatory factors. Students will be introduced to theory which allows them to develop an understanding of the operations of discrimination in everyday life as it relates to ethnicity, gender and disability.
