Across the world, human rights are still unevenly realised. From access to housing and healthcare to climate justice and racial equality, people come together in social movements to demand change. These movements, whether global and longstanding like the feminist movement, or focused and short-term like anti-deforestation campaigns, bring together individuals, NGOs, trade unions and others to challenge injustice. In this module you’ll explore how activism works, why movements form, and the power dynamics they face. We’ll look at real-world examples and unpack the theories behind organising, advocacy and resistance. You’ll also examine how human rights laws and global institutions can be used as vehicles to support these efforts but also the obstacles to success. Teaching includes a weekly interactive workshop and a student-led seminar, with plenty of resources and support via GCU Learn.
